Swingin’ Utters – Poorly Formed

Swingin’ Utters – Poorly Formed

Though the Swingin’ Utters have been around for nearly twenty years I have to admit I finally started paying attention to this band when Jack Dalrymple of One Man Army and early Dead To Me joined the band. I liked their previous record Here, Under Protest but with Poorly Formed they’ve really hit the right spot.

What I remember from the few songs on various Fat compilations Swingin’ Utters sounded to me of a rowdy bunch of Americans who wanted to be in an early British punk band. Since I already had all the records of Rancid there never seemed  to be the need for me to check out more Uttters’ songs. I might be totally wrong and the band has always sounded like they do on the last two records, but I don’t think so.

Remember the hype around The Strokes when they debuted with This Is It? That hypemachine should get back to work for the Swingin’ Utters because Poorly Formed does come true on the promise that The Strokes could never deliver. Exciting retropunk and rock I would say and ‘Brains’ is a perfect example of that:

As well as ‘Pour Beans’:

The Swingin’ Utters truly have found a sound of their own which makes them stick out between the batch of bands releasing new records this year.
