The SLM – Death Aquatic

The SLM – Death Aquatic

The SLM, three young lads from Portsmouth, England, are into the finer things in life. Their preferences can be brought back to three deeply existential topics: Sharks, Zombies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

All of this has resulted in a 9 track cd with the most epic cover artwork in the history of epic works of art:

Allow that to sink in for a second. That’s the Shredder. Conquering the high seas. On a ZOMBIE SHARK! How epic is that?! (Yes, the band sells this design as a shirt and despite it being a bit less colourful, it’s equal amounts of awesome.)

Of course, there is also some music to be discussed. The SLM plays fast, sloppy hardcore punk / thrash with occasional hints to skatepunk, Misfits-flavoured horrorpunk and even a bit of surf and ska. I strongly advise you to skip the opening track My Name Is Quint because it’s kind of boring and whiny and does not represent the rest of the record at all. Second track Zombie Shark (“I think that I am familiar with the fact that you are going to ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you in the ass!”) is all the introduction you need. You don’t even have to wait for a new record to enjoy the obligatory B-Movie sequel, since Return Of Zombie Shark conveniently rolls around only 6 tracks later, earwormy sing-a-long lalaalalaa chorus and all.

If you are a fan of bands like Municipal Waste, Send More Paramedics and NoFX and can see yourself running around your living room screaming “THIS SHARK GOT BIT BY A ZOMBIE! NOW IT’S A ZOMBIE SHARK!” at the top of your lungs, The SLM might be a band you want to check out. By no means is this an exceptionally good record (it’s not an exceptionally bad one either, these dudes know what they’re doing), but I enjoyed it a lot anyway. The SLM is basicly these guys’ excuse to have a laugh and a pint or 12 and I’m right there laughing along with them.
